Discounts for Senior Citizens

When can I start receiving Senior Citizen Discounts?

Although the most common age for senior discounts to begin is age 65, some companies offer senior passes, special senior programs or senior discounts as early as age 50.  55+ discounts are not uncommon, so it always pays to ask!

  • Many hotels offer Senior discounts - see a list of senior citizen discounts at hotels.
  • Seniors can also get discounts on car rentals, restaurants, and other travel related services.
  • Some merchants, such as grocery stores or pharmacies also offer discounts to seniors or will have a special "Senior Citizen Day" or Senior Discount Days" When seniors get an extra 5%, 10% or even more off the everyday prices.  Be sure to ask about limitations before assuming that the discount applies to everything in the store.

Tips for Seniors

  • You can often find store discounts, travel discounts, or even discounts on services.  If you don't see a discount offer, you can always ask.
  • Carry your photo ID (passport or driver's license) with your birth date or your AARP card to take advantage of Senior Citizen or "Golden Passport" discounts.
  • Always as about and get replies in writing.  If you need proof later that you were told about a senior discount, it will be much easier if you have your proof in writing.
  • Do not assume discounts are available all the time.  Many hotels have blackout dates.
  • Do not assume that if one hotel in a chain offers a discount that they all do.  Many hotels are independently owned. Individual hotel owners may have the right to select which discounts are offered, the percent offered and the dates that apply.
  • Blackout dates are often during peak tourist seasons and/or holidays.
  • If a hotel offers a discount that is "up to" some percentage off, remember that a zero discount is included in that statement.
  • Always ask in advance. If you are relying on the discount in your travel budget, you would be smart to get that reply in writing to avoid any misunderstandings later.
